Arts Award.

Obviously, that image isn't of my arts award course! It just looked pretty! I am, however, working on my silver arts award, and I will be keeping an online record of what I do here, for my mentor (hello, Colin!), and the world (oooooh!) to see. Nice!
Unit 1, Part A
This is the bit where I have to evaluate myself and outline my challenge. So, here goes...
Evaluate your own aspirations, strengths and weaknesses within your chosen art form
My chosen art form is performance theatre - specifially acting, probably in a physical theatre piece.
I have significant experience of working with non-naturalistic theatre, which, for a performance for children, will be very useful. I hope to be able to build on this, because, having spent the last year working on Stanislavski, much of it has been pushed to the back of my mind.
In terms of creating plots, I am an experienced fiction writer, and therefore believe that I will be able to use this to help me, however I have never developed the plot-line for a children's piece of theatre, and have only adapted exitsing scripts in the past - this will be a challenge for me, and I hope to be able to better my skills in this area through the challenge.
Overall, I am looking to develop my skills in devising drama and performing non-naturalistically, to aid me with my A2 level Theatre course.
Frame a challenge to develop your arts abilities
I have never been involved in developing the plot of a drama for a younger audience before, and so I will research the history of local rivers to use as a basis for the drama, and use this research to help build a plot-line.
Consider what actions you should take to achieve your challenge
Having no experience of children's theatre, I should watch some existing examples, in order to enhance my understanding of the artform.
I will also need to look more deeply into my existing historical knowledge of the local rivers, which we are using as stimulus for our piece, in order to decide on aspects of the history to use in the plot. I will need to speak with other members of my group to make a joint decision on which aspects we would like to incorporate, and how; and we can then begin to develop our drama.
Outline what support you will need to achieve your challenge and where to find it
I will need the support of my peers in our Theatre "company", in order to make a calculated decision about the plot for our piece. I will also need the support of my teachers in order to ensure that all technical elements required are in place.
There is a chance that I may be able to liase with a local historian about the rivers, however without this I will be using Encarta(r), the internet, and local libraries to do my research.
Unit 1, Part B.1
This is where I have to tell y'all the plan of action...
Detailed check-list to achieve my challenge
-
Decide upon a dramatic aim for the piece; educating the children about their river - Outline the plan for the production; to use the river as a character and show her past and future through looking into history and global warming, for example
- See an example of children’s’ theatre, in order to develop a list of conventions to adhere to
- Research the history of the city and identify key moments of interest based around the river
- Using workshop-style rehearsals, develop these key moments into scenes with characters, personalities, and dramatic aims
- Work with members of the group focussing on the future of the river to develop a coherent performance plan
- Plot basic scripts for scenes and cast roles using workshop-ascertained skills to determine this
- Determine any props or set necessary
- Rehearse like crazy! J
